Sowing Mustard Faith
At the time of creation Holy Scripture tells us that man was created from the dust of the ground and GOD breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and he became a living soul. (Genesis 2: 4-8). You and I are three in one. You are Spirit therefore you don’t die. You go on to live forever for eternity whether in heaven or hell. The real you is a spirit. You possess a soul. Your soul is composed of your mind, emotions and will. Your soul mediates between your spirit and your body. Your feelings are in the soul. And lastly you live in your human body that came from the dust of the earth. When you die, your spirit (the real you) lives on, but the body is buried, fulfilling (Genesis 3:19) “…for out of the ground you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Your mind which is the decision making faculty of the soul is further divided into the conscious mind and sub-conscious mind. The conscious mind is also referred to as the subjective mind. It learns through observation of the environment and depends on your five senses of sight, touch, hearing, feeling and tasting.
The sub-conscious mind is the seat of your emotions. It’s the creative mind. It reacts based on the nature of thoughts held in the conscious mind. Whatever you think with the conscious mind is impressed or downloaded to the sub-conscious mind. This is what gets manifested in your life later. The sub-conscious mind perceives by intuition and interacts with your environment independent of the five senses. It accepts as true whatever the conscious mind believes to be true (even if it’s false). If you think good, then good will follow you and if you think evil / bad, it’s what will follow you. Once the sub-conscious accepts an idea it will start to follow it and will bring to pass any condition, experience or event it gets from the conscious mind, because it does not reason.
(Proverbs 23:7) “As a man thinks in his heart (sub-conscious mind) so is he.
From childhood our sub-conscious mind has been programmed to think in a particular way and indeed we have followed this way without reasoning. It has later framed our adulthood lives.
I carried out a survey where I asked university students about the toys they played with as kids. Majority of the gents said they had toy cars and building blocks yet the ladies said that they played mainly with dolls. When I asked them about their future life ambitions, 80 % of the ladies said that upon graduation from university they looked forward to get married, have kids and be good wives. Yet the gents looked forward to building their own homes and with 60% planning on buying their own cars. As simple as it may be, there has been a silent deposit into your sub-conscious mind and that is what you are unconsciously acting upon right now. These toys given to these university students as kids had a profound impact on their decision making and course of life they were living in their adult lives.
Many people hear statements like;
- We cannot afford that because money doesn’t grow on trees.
- You are left with a few months to die from cancer.
- You will never amount to anything.
- You will never get married since no one in your family is married.
- Do you think you will be the first to build a house in the entire clan?
- You are not beautiful / handsome and no one will ever love you.
- Your business will never work. And much more….
Once you hear these statements, they hurt you and you later go on to think and mediate upon them and why someone spoke them into your life. By doing so, you are depositing them to the sub-conscious mind and indeed you will later see them as self fulfilling prophesies in your life.
On the other hand however, if you were affirmed amidst the life challenges;
- You will make it in life despite your poor family back ground.
- Don’t give up on your marriage.
- You can excel in your studies.
- You are beautiful.
- I love you.
Indeed you have been able to achieve great things in your life amidst the life challenges or hurdles you had to overcome.
Remember if you want to control a man’s destiny, control his sub-conscious mind by what you feed his / her conscious mind.
Faith and Fear
“So faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17)
You came from the dust of the ground (soil) and for you to bear fruit (see results) you need to sow the word of GOD in your heart (sub-conscious mind). The bible is filled with many promises about your health, relationships, finances, security, inner worth and much more. However you could be living a mediocre life because you have gone on to hear and believe words of politicians, your parents, friends, workmates or employer that are false about who you are in Jesus Christ.
In order for you to undo the lies of the enemy that have been sowed in our sub-conscious mind, you need to find the promises of Christ in the word of GOD (bible) and start to daily confess and proclaim them in your life. Do this daily, like you would take medicine. In the morning, at noon and at night before you sleep. This will reprogram your sub-conscious mind and your life will significantly change.
You can follow these links below for a list of selected promises from GOD as written
in the Bible.
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)
Faith and Fear work using the same principle. Faith connects you to the things you hope for, while fear will connect you to the things you fear. (Job 3: 25) says, “For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.” Take an audit of your life, and think through the many challenges you have faced. Many could have started with someone speaking negatively in your life. You later meditated on what you were told. Fear and worry gripped you and this later came to pass in your life.
Let’s take Benjamin, a fresh university graduate. He is told that in Uganda jobs are scarce and hard to find. He is also told that to get a job you need to know someone in a high position or you will have to bribe to get the job. These words received in Benjamin’s conscious mind are further imprinted into is sub-conscious mind by a conversation he holds with his cousin Peter from a relatively influential family. Peter narrates how he walked the streets of Kampala for 3 year after graduation without a job and was only helped by an aunt to secure his current job through an introductory letter she wrote to friend in a government ministry. Benjamin holds this image in his mind that he will never get a job. He even stops trying to apply for jobs and 5 years later since he graduated and he is still unemployed.
What images and thoughts are you holding in your mind that have held you back from progress? Form new thoughts based on the promises of Jesus Christ and have a more fulfilling life.
I remember this like it just happened yesterday. In 2006 as a second year student at university I encountered the Holy Spirit and His power through the Life in Spirit seminars. I was challenged by the life of St. Peter the apostle whose shadow healed the sick (Acts 5: 12-16). I said to myself, if am praying to and believing the same GOD that
St. Peter served, I need to see the same in my life. I later took it upon my-self to pray for my sick friends and believed GOD for a miracle. Even if it didn’t happened I had the faith that I had done my part. One day a classmate of mine was sick and had missed lectures for a while. I visited him at his hostel and I requested to pray with him. He allowed and the prayer took less than 3 minutes. The next day he reported for the lectures and testified of how he had instantly been healed (the sickness and pain had left him). However he confessed that he didn’t tell me immediately until he was sure he had been healed. This affirmed my faith in the power of the word of GOD and the impact it has when we confess it, act on it and believe it will come to pass.
Faith without actions is dead.
“What good is it, my brother, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? So faith by itself, if it does not have works is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. (James 1:14 – 17)
A more direct scriptural context of this verse is that; we are supposed to help people in need rather than just wishing well for them without doing anything about their situation. However on a personal level St. James tells us to demonstrate our faith by taking a corresponding action for the faith we have that GOD will answer our prayer.
We had planned our wedding for May 2013. In April 2012 my contract was not renewed. This was sabotage to the plans I had. I had saved about Ugx 8,000,000. I talked to my fiancée that we should go on with the wedding plans despite the fact that I didn’t have a job then but believed that the LORD would see us through. In order not to spend the money we had saved for other things we decided to draw the wedding date much closer. We selected November 2012. Many of our family members discouraged us. They called us young and unfit to get married. I was 27 years and my fiancé 24 years. Every day I held a mental image of us standing before a priest and exchanging the marriage vows.
Amidst what was happening we pushed on and planned for a UGX 8,000,000 wedding. We had planned not to go for honey moon and also reduced our guest list to only 150 people. We had to carry out both the Kwanjula (customary wedding) and Church wedding in a space of two weeks. As weeks passed and days got closer we lacked the finances to pull off both events successfully however we kept our faith in the LORD. About 2 weeks to the wedding day, miraculously friends started contributing to our wedding. We were able to successfully do both events without getting into debts.
We managed to go to Zanzibar for honey moon despite the fact that we had previously planned not have a honey moon due to lack of money. We had a balance of UGX 5,000,000 that we used to buy the land were we have built our home.
The image I held in my mind was that of exchanging vows before a priest
For me the key was having faith, believing that our wedding would be possible. Shutting my conscious mind from the negative words of people around us and holding an image of a finished and successful wedding in my sub-conscious mind. And then demonstrated our faith by taking action to set the wedding date and started on the preparation until we saw our prayer fully answered by GOD.
6 years later, we were blessed with Duke Israel and Predire Pieta
Whatever you what to achieve in life, plant the seed of GOD’s word and promises in your sub-conscious mind (heart), meditate on it (hold a mental image of the answered prayer) and take corresponding action.
If you are believing GOD for a job, spouse, healing, finances, children, house, car etc , confess the promises of GOD for your situation daily, see these prayer petitions as already answered in your mind and take corresponding action.
- For the job seeker; find job adverts and apply for the job seeing your-self already called for an interview.
- For a spouse, make friends and also propose to the ones you believe can be a potential wife or husband.
- For healing confess the healing scriptures and try out something you could not do before.
So, make a resolution right now and write the actions you will take in correspondence to the prayers you have been having as a demonstration of your faith with action.
Mustard Seed Faith
Matthew: 17:14-20 Recounts an incident where Jesus’ disciples are unable to pray for the healing of an epileptic boy. The father takes the boy to Jesus. Jesus rebukes the demon in him, it comes out and the boy is healed instantly. Later, privately the disciples ask Jesus why they failed to cast out the evil spirit. In response Jesus said, “Because of your unbelief. For truly I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there, and it will move and nothing will be impossible for you.”
All you need is faith (Hope and Assurance that what is unseen will come to pass) as small as a mustard seed and nothing will be impossible for you.

No matter the situation you are going through, or discouragement that has been spoken in your life, all you need is mustard seed faith. Can you have faith or belief that your situation will get better? Can you hold a mental image of already achieving what you have been praying for? Can you already see your challenge as accomplished?
It will be a matter of time, because everything is possible if you have faith as small as a mustard seed. Speak to the mountain (challenge) in your life and it will be moved for nothing will be impossible for you.
Three years into our marriage we felt we needed a house of our own since the rent payments kept on increasing annually. My wife challenged me to get started and get out of the comfort of renting. I got an architect that made us a blue print of our future home and also developed a 3D artistic impression of how the house would look like when complete. We hung this in our bedroom as a constant reminder of GOD’s promise of provision for the house. This also helped us build a mental image of faith to pass onto our sub-conscious mind.
Artistic 3D impression for our family house.
We then took steps of faith;
We saved UGX 5,000,000 and started on the house foundation. Upon completion we paused construction for 6 months. We then took a loan and raised half section of the house. We started living in the house without it being plastered; there was no power, no cemented floor, and no perimeter wall. All this was the action we took to demonstrate our mustard seed faith. After a month we were able to get electricity into the house and made other provisions to make it comfortable for the time being as we paid off the loan.
Two years later, we were able to get funds to complete the other section of the house, plaster, put tiles, windows, doors and make it more habitable.
I believe if we had not taken the step of faith and got started, probably we would still be renting today. Despite the fact that it’s not yet complete to our satisfaction, it is a lot better than how we got into it. And daily we continue to have faith in Jesus that we shall complete it to look like the dream 3D artistic impression that we have.
- You are three in one; Body, Soul, Spirit.
- You were created from the dust of the ground. When your body dies, it goes back to the ground but your Spirit lives forever in heaven or hell.
- Your Soul is composed of the mind, will and emotions.
- Your mind is composed of the conscious mind and sub-conscious mind.
- Your conscious mind impresses thoughts onto your sub-conscious mind and this in turn influences the life you live.
- The word of GOD is seed that you plant in your soul through meditation and speaking.
- The planted word of GOD gives birth to faith. Faith is assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
- Faith connects us to the things we hope for while fear also connects us to the things we fear.
- Faith without works / action is dead. Take corresponding action towards the things you are believing GOD for in your life.
- As long as you have mustard seed faith, nothing will be impossible for you.
